“You cannot protect the environment unless you empower people. You inform them and help them understand that these resources are their own and that they must protect them” -Wangari Maathai.

Nigeria has the largest Mangrove Ecosystem in Africa and the fourth largest in the world and the bulk of it is found in the Niger Delta. Millions of people depend on it for food, shelter, income, medicine, and protection from coastal erosion. The importance of Mangroves is summed up in UNESCO’S proclamation in 2015,…’’considering that mangroves are a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem, providing by virtue of their existence, biomass and productivity substantial benefits to human beings, providing forestry, fishery goods and services as well as contributing to the protection of the coastline and being particularly relevant in terms of mitigation of the effects of climate change and food security for local communities.’’-Proclamation of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystems.

However, the mangrove forest faces unprecedented threats arising from anthropological sources including oil pollution, overexploitation, invasive species, and municipal development. To save the Mangroves, awareness is key. Mangrove Marathon provides the platform for raising the much needed awareness.
