tree About Mangrovethon

Bringing People Together to Protect Our Mangroves

Mangrovethon is an environmental awareness and engagement initiative associated with the Mangrove Marathon, a conservation-focused running and walking event created to promote awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems in Nigeria.

The initiative uses the power of sport, public participation, environmental education, and partnerships to encourage greater appreciation and protection of mangrove forests.

Mangroves support biodiversity, provide important breeding and nursery habitats for marine life, help stabilize coastlines, store carbon, and sustain the livelihoods of many coastal communities.

However, these ecosystems continue to face significant pressures from pollution, habitat loss, unsustainable resource exploitation, and competing land-use demands.

Mangrovethon seeks to bring environmental conservation closer to the public by creating opportunities for individuals, communities, institutions, and businesses to engage with the cause.

We believe that environmental awareness should lead to responsible decisions and practical action.

Through collective participation and collaboration, we aim to contribute to a future where Nigeria’s mangrove ecosystems are valued, protected, and sustainably managed.

Why mangroves matter

Why mangroves matter

01

Coastal Protection and Resilience

Mangroves can reduce wave energy, help stabilize shorelines, and strengthen the resilience of vulnerable coastal areas.

02

Biodiversity and Environmental Balance

Mangroves provide habitats for marine and coastal species while supporting healthy estuaries and nearshore ecosystems.

03

Climate Change Mitigation

Mangrove ecosystems store substantial quantities of carbon in their vegetation and soils, making their protection essential for climate change mitigation.

04

Livelihoods and Food Security

Many coastal communities depend on mangrove-associated fisheries and other ecosystem resources for food, income, and livelihoods.
